Spybot Search and Destroy Instructions
This is a general walk-through of the operation of Spybot Search and Destroy. If you need instructions for downloading files to your computer, please click here. Spybot Search and Destroy is a valuable tool to have on your PC. Layman's PC Sales and Service recommends that Spybot be installed on any computer that uses the internet, and have it's immunize feature enabled under each user (more on this later).
Once Spybot is installed and ran for the first time under each user account, Following the disclaimer shown below, there will be a Wizard appear (Wizard is a process of windows that step you through the process of setting something up in your PC). The wizard will walk you through backing up the registry, searching for and downloading updates, and immunizing the current user's account.
The wizard is shown below in the top-left corner of the screen shot.
Click 'Create registry backup', once that process completes, click 'Next'.
After clicking 'Search for updates', and then 'Download all available updates', Spybot will automatically download and install the updates. Spybot being a totally free program, relies on donations to keep them going (and the writers have day jobs), They also rely on organizations to host the updates for them. This being the case, sometimes not all the update servers are available. If this is the case, Spybot will try to download the update for up to two minutes and possibly seem like the application has hung during this time. If this is the case, be patient until it kicks you back to the main screen, and as shown in the screenshot below, use the program's main window in the background to choose a different server to download the updates from.
After the updates install as shown below, they will be marked as failed with a red X to the left or a green checkmark to indicate success. Once completed successfully downloading all the available updates, click 'Next' to continue.
After the updates install, it restarts Spybot to make all the needed changes. Once Spybot restarts, this screen will display again unless you previously checked the box for "Don't show this message again".
When the program's main window appears, you'll see the following buttons displayed in the left side of the window.
Click the 'Immunize' button on the left of the screen, it will scan your system and see if there are currently known bad products already blocked as shown below.
Click ok on the screen above, and the Immunize button with the green + next to it in the main program window. When complete you should see a screen similar to what's shown below.
After the immunize is enabled, click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left, and then click "check for problems" and the following screen will be displayed.
After the scan completes, you'll be presented with the list of the scan results as shown below. Ensure all items are checked, and click "Fix selected problems"
