Adware and Spyware (Malware) Support
Are you bothered by pop-ups and is your internet connection slowing down? This is almost always a sure sign of Malware. (Malware=Malicious Software - this includes adware, spyware, and rootkits). Malware are pieces of software that load into your machine when you install certain "freeware" applications or visit certain websites.
Layman's PC recommends you download, install, update, and run both, Spybot Search & Destroy and MalwareBytes.org to eliminate most malware applets. Use Ewido's online scanner to test for some of the less common but equally damaging applets. Windows Defender is a good way of preventing many infections on Windows XP. Windows Defender is included with Vista.
