General Installation
and Setup Information
- Administrative privileges are required to install or uninstall the HP Photosmart
software.
- The HP Photosmart software supports a variety of HP products. The HP Photosmart
software installs by default into the C:\Program Files\HP folder. You can
change this install folder during the first install of HP Photosmart software
on a computer. Subsequent installs of other HP products that use the HP Photosmart
software will automatically use the same folder as the first install. To change
the folder where the HP imaging software is installed, you must first uninstall
all HP imaging devices and the HP Photosmart software and then re-install
all HP imaging devices and HP Photosmart software.
- HP Photosmart software will install in the same language as a previous install
on the same system. If you wish to change the language of the HP Photosmart
software, you must first uninstall the software for every device that uses
the HP Photosmart software, the HP Photosmart software itself, and then re-install.
HP Photosmart software will install in the language of the operating system
of the PC by default (if that language is supported by the HP Photosmart software).
- HP Photosmart software functionality on systems that just meet minimum system
requirements will be limited. Use of many images, or videos, require a system
that meets the recommended system requirements for acceptable performance
and reliability.

To Enable Bluetooth on Windows Vista
If the printer supports Bluetooth, this functionality may not be enabled automatically
after you install the printer software for Windows Vista. If Bluetooth is not
working properly after installing the software, follow these three procedures
in order.
1. Install Bluetooth on the computer
- If the printer software is not installed, run the installation program as
described in the setup or quick start documentation that came with the printer.
When prompted, make the following selections:
- In the Connection Type window, select Directly to this computer
using a USB cable, and then click Next.
- If you want a Bluetooth connection and no USB connection, then select
the check box to connect the printer later in the Connect Your Device
Now window. Then click Next.
If you want a Bluetooth and a USB connection, then skip this step.
- If the printer requires a dongle for Bluetooth support, connect the dongle
to a USB port on the printer.
- Start the computer.
- If the computer requires a dongle for Bluetooth support, connect the dongle
to a USB port on the computer.
To determine if the computer has built-in Bluetooth support, refer to the
documentation that came with the computer.
Windows Vista will install the Bluetooth driver automatically. Bluetooth
is successfully installed on the computer when the blue Bluetooth icon appears
in the system tray, which is typically at the bottom right corner of the
screen.
2. Set up the Bluetooth connection for the printer
- Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the system tray on the computer, and then
click Add a Bluetooth Device.
Complete the information in the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard as follows:
- Select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box,
and then click Next.
- In the Select the Bluetooth device that you want to add window,
select the name of the printer, and then click Next.
If the printer is not listed, click Search Again.
- In the Do you need a passkey to add your device? window, refer
to the User Guide that came with the printer, and then select the specified
option. Click Next.
If the Found New Hardware wizard appears, click Don't show this
message again for this device. If the wizard appears again, select
this option again.
- Click Finish to complete the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard.
- Right-click the Computer icon on the desktop, then click Properties.
- In the Control Panel Tasks area, click Device Manager.
Follow these instructions in the Device Manager:
- Expand Other devices, then right-click the printer name and click
Update Driver Software.
- In the Update Driver Software window, click Browse my computer
for driver software.
- When prompted, click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on
my computer, and then click Next.
- In the Select your device's type from the list below window,
select Printer, and then click Next.
- In the Add Printer Wizard, select HP in the Manufacturer
list, and then select the corresponding device series in the Printer
list. Click Next.
- When the Update Driver Warning window displays, click Yes.
Windows Vista will install the driver for the printer. When the Windows
has successfully updated your driver software window appears, click
Close.
3. Verify that the printer driver is installed correctly
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and
then click Printers.
- In the Printers window, right-click the name of the printer, and
then click Properties.
- In the Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then
click Print Test Page.
If the test page prints successfully, the printer is installed correctly.
If it fails to print, ensure that you have installed the print or ink cartridges,
and that the printer has paper. If the test page still fails, repeat step
3 in the previous procedure to update the driver in the Device Manager,
and ensure that you selected the correct printer type in the Add Printer
Wizard.
Multiple HP Imaging Products
When multiple instances of the same device are installed, two entries appear
in the HP Solution Center. Typically, the first instance of the device installed
has the name of the device (for example, HP Deskjet X series), and the second
instance is called copy 1. You can rename these by going into the printer folder
and changing the name of each entry. For example, HP Deskjet X - home and HP
Deskjet X - work. Changing these entries also changes the name of the status
icon and the device listing in the HP Solution Center.
Installation Problems
Recovering from a Failed Installation
If the installation failed, HP recommends that you review the troubleshooting
information in the printed documentation. If you continue to have problems,
go to www.hp.com/go/windowsvista
for more suggestions on troubleshooting a failed installation.
Troubleshooting
For more troubleshooting help, see the Troubleshooting information in the onscreen
or printed documentation that was included with your device, or visit the Windows
Vista support website at www.hp.com/go/windowsvista.
Device is Not Recognized
If your device is not recognized:
- Ensure your USB cable is connected correctly. Remove the USB cable, look
at the end of the cable, and then match it to the pattern on the USB port.
Make sure that it is not upside down. Insert one end of the USB cable completely
into the USB port on the HP device and the other end into the back of the
computer. Be sure that you have plugged the USB cable into the USB port on
the back of the device. Some devices, like Deskjet printers, have a USB port
in front for direct connection to a camera. This front USB port cannot be
used to connect the device to your computer.
- Check that the device is turned on. Devices are not recognized when the
power is switched off.
- Try connecting the USB cable to a different USB connector on the computer.
- Ensure that your USB cable is no more than 5 meters (16 feet) in length.
If your device included a Setup Guide, review it carefully for details on
how to connect your device to your PC.
HP Photosmart Imaging Applications
You may have HP Photosmart Premier, HP Photosmart Essential, and HP Photosmart
Express installed, depending on the number of HP devices you own and the install
options you selected. All applications may be safely installed on a computer
at the same time, and you may use any of the applications depending on your
preference.
