v5 Windows Update Instructions

If this is the first time Windows Update has been ran, it may take a while to open the page.  It will display a security warning that the Windows Update applet is about to be installed.

It is not recommended to "Always trust" any content from any company that pops up one of these security warnings. In this case, you know the content that is being downloaded.  Choose 'Yes' to accept the applet and continue updating Windows.  The security warning may come up more than once, choose yes on all of them.  These security warnings only come up the first time Windows Update is ran.  Choosing 'Yes' to install the applet will bring you to the following screen.

After the applet downloads, it will prompt you to install. Press the 'Install Now' button.

There will be a short wait while the applet installs and brings up the next screen.

At the welcome screen you will scroll down with the bar on the right and choose "Custom Install".

After choosing "Custom Install" Microsoft sends the list of all the updates they've released and your system processes and compares this list to the files already present on your system.  Once the list is processed it will present the following screen.

On this screen you can choose an option on the left under "Pick updates to install".  Anything under the "High priority updates" will be automatically selected for download.  To add or remove a component, simply scroll down and 'check' or 'uncheck' the box to the left of the component.  All components other than "High priority updates" are optional and should be examined to see if they would be useful in your system.  Driver Updates from the Windows Update site are not recommended by Layman's PC Sales and Service.  Layman's PC recommends getting driver updates from the hardware manufacturer.

After choosing what updates you wish to install, click "Go to install updates". You will then get the following screen.

Click the 'Install' button. Accept any license agreement that may come up.

At this point it will automatically download the chosen updates and install them. After the installation you may be prompted to restart, do so.

Some updates require other updates to be installed first, and some updates must be installed alone.  For this reason, you should repeat this process until there are no "High priority updates" left to download and you have gotten all the optional components you wish to install.

If for any reason you have problems with this process please contact Layman's PC Sales and Service.
